Real-time video over low-bandwidth links
Real-time video leaves no room to wait. When bandwidth is tight and the link is unreliable, the codec has to keep the picture usable as data arrives, and as data goes missing. Atlas Compression designs custom codecs for exactly those conditions.
The problem with real-time video on weak links
Live video has to be encoded, sent, and shown within a very short time. If the connection is slow or drops data, there is no chance to resend and wait. Video that is built from frames that depend on one another can fall apart when one piece is lost, and the damage can spread to the frames that follow.
Low-bandwidth links make this harder, because there is less room to spend on protecting the video, and low-power hardware limits how much work the encoder can do.
Error-resilient by design
We are developing an error-resilient encoder and decoder for a real-time video transport platform. It is built around three ideas:
- Encoding designed so frame loss does not cascade
- Decoding that handles incomplete data gracefully
- Built for real-time, low-power hardware
What this means in practice
A real-time video system has to balance several things at once: how much bandwidth the video can use, how long it can take to reach the viewer, how much processing the hardware can afford, and how well the picture holds up when data goes missing. Improving one often costs another, which is why the right balance depends on your use case.
We treat those limits as the starting point for the design, and we validate the result against the conditions it will actually meet.
Fitted to your link and your hardware
There is no single setting that suits every network. We design, build, and validate codecs around your hardware, bandwidth, latency, and network conditions, so the trade-offs match how your system is really used.
The result is video that stays usable when the network degrades, rather than video that only works on a good day.
Where it is used
This work matters wherever video has to move over constrained links: drones and uncrewed systems, defense and public safety, and other teams who cannot rely on a clean connection. We work with customers around the world.
