Atlas Compression
Frequently asked questions
Plain answers about what we build and who we build it for.
What does Atlas Compression do?
Atlas Compression designs, builds, and validates custom video codecs around your hardware, bandwidth, latency, network conditions, and licensing exposure. We also redesign existing codecs to remove patent risk, and we are extending the same engineering into AI and data compression.
What is a custom video codec, and why would I need one?
A codec is the software that compresses video for sending or storage and decompresses it for viewing. Off-the-shelf codecs are built for someone else's problem. A custom codec is designed from your requirements up, so it fits the hardware and links you actually use and the way your system works.
What does patent-safe video compression mean?
It describes how we design. We work around patent-encumbered tools from the start, and we redesign existing codecs to reduce your exposure to patent claims. It is an engineering approach, not a legal opinion or guarantee, so please review your specific situation with your own counsel.
Can you build video codecs for drones and uncrewed systems?
Yes. Drones and uncrewed systems are one of our core areas: video from constrained hardware over constrained links. We design the encoder and decoder around the platform's hardware and the network conditions it will meet.
How do you keep video usable on unreliable networks?
We are developing an error-resilient encoder and decoder for a real-time video transport platform. Encoding is designed so that frame loss does not cascade, decoding handles incomplete data gracefully, and the whole design is built for real-time, low-power hardware.
Which industries do you serve?
We serve teams that need data to move or store efficiently, including drones and uncrewed systems, defense and public safety, streaming and broadcast, legal and litigation support, and AI and data centers. We work with customers around the world.
Does Atlas Compression work on AI and data compression?
Yes. We are extending the same engineering to other compression problems, including compression for large-scale AI and data center workloads. Our engineers work on compression internals, starting with video codecs.
How do I get started?
